Sails design by International artists in fron of St Marco, Venice

Michael Ross whose inspired idea created Fine Art Sails continues his global adventure, this time in Italy: Sails designed by International artists were featured at the incredible 'Barcolana Regatta’ in Trieste with participation from some high level sailors, supporting the Andrew Simpson Foundation. The sails were sailing to Venice the following weekend as a display for the yacht club 'Compagnia della Vela' 2018. Over 200 boats invaded the San Marco Basin together with Fine Art and the traditional sails. The award ceremony in San Giorgio takes place Saturday, 24th November. More info in facebook.

The 2017 edition of BEIRUT ART FAIR will offer an exceptional and innovative program that confirms Beirut’s role as one of today’s most vibrant centers of contemporary creation.
BEIRUT ART FAIR is the leading platform for the discovery of new artists, trends, galleries, institutions, and publications from the ME.NA.SA., thus representing a principal catalyst for artistic development of the region.
As Beirut is a bridge between East & West, the fair establishes and builds artistic links between diverse cultures, fostering collaboration between galleries with a demonstrated commitment to making discoveries.
In just a few years, BEIRUT ART FAIR has become an international artistic event that attracts an ever greater number of visitors to Lebanon: professionals and art lovers from the region and from around the world. We’ve decided to highlight this evolution by putting together a selection committee that reflects the support BEIRUT ART FAIR enjoys from the most important art collectors in the region, whom we’ve enlisted on the basis of their rich expertise, their intellectual curiosity, and the quality of their views on the regional art scene.

Since its creation in 2010, BEIRUT ART FAIR has served to both spotlight and reinforce a dynamic art market that today finds itself in full expansion, both in Lebanon and in the broader ME.NA.SA. region.
From 19 to 26 September 2017, BEIRUT ART WEEK opens public spaces and luxury boutiques of the capital to artistic expression.

Artstyle Magazine about David Begbie's exhibition Shadows of the Past London 2017
‘Shadows of the Past‘ is an exciting and very unusual collaboration for ‘London Art Week‘ combining artefacts from the past with contemporary sculpture. I will be making new sculpture for this joint exhibition inspired by renaissance ceramics, presented by Bazaart who will display my work together with Renaissance pottery at ContiniArtUK, New Bond Street. Camille Leprince and Justin Raccanello's choice is highly selective: quality, rarity, condition and the impact of each ceramic is attractive to a modern public, collectors, connoisseurs and museums as much as young clients who might have never explored early European ceramic art before.

Commission by LW for Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa, Dubai, UAE

Mesh Sculpture of a Dhow - Arabic ship - in hotel lobby Le Royal Meridien Dubai

Derived from Arabic dhow designs ‘AIRWAVE‘ is conceived as more than a sculptural rendition of a traditional vessel.

Fabricated in white painted stainless steel mesh, etherial, translucent, precariously poised, this over 6 metre height suspended composition suggests it is more the soul of a vessel than a vessel itself. Rather than in water it floats in air. Phantom-like, this sculpture seems mysteriously poised between the elements where horizon is blurred or lost, its ethos suggesting it exists not only where sea and sky optically merge but in a place where they physically merge, too and where there are neither one thing nor the other.

It’s an exploding apparition which draws attention to the fine line between liquid, air and that which is solid – water, mist, cloud, even ice. Its anti-gravitational composition ultimately expresses a vision and notion of invisible forces which surround us and which form part of everything which exists – electromagnetic and radio waves, light waves, wind and liquid shock waves as well as gravity and its counterpart relentlessly, persuasively, explosively shaping and forcing us to go with the flow.

Hand sculptures in garden Southern France - artwork by David Begbie
Art Gallery Marshall Murray exhibits a selection of my work in a beautiful sculpture garden Fern de La Gorra in Southern France. Highly recommended – a visit when you're near Monaco! Please email Oliver Hawkins (by appointment only).
The stunning garden near Monaco presents more than 40 artworks. Marshall Murray loves bringing a slice of British life to the Cote D’Azur, hosting viewings inviting art lovers and artists to meet and mingle over glasses of rosé. Since September 2015 Marshall Murray exhibits British sculpture in southern France, a collaboration with the award-winning international garden designer James Basson, his sumptuous planting juxtaposed with sculpture. Lighting of the garden is installed by Jean-Phillipe Weimer. Watch the video (Marshall Murray Facebook) or open more images with following link:

‘The Real Face of Burns‘

Portrait in steel of poet Robert BurnsDavid Burns portrait and paintings
Flyer for art exhibition The Rea Face of Burns
21 Feb – 14 Jun 2015
Robert Burns Birthplace Museum
Ayr, Scotland

ARTRUIST in Edinburgh announces a new exhibition and I am happy to take part with sculpture BURNS, my portrait of the poet:

Robert Burns suspended portrait stainless steel
”Next February, in the wake of Hogmanay and a month of Burns suppers, when there is such a strong emphasis on tradition and the poetry of Burns, we aim to shift the focus. From February to June 2015, we will show an exhibition which explores his appearance. We all think we know what he looked like, primarily because of the ubiquitous Nasmyth portrait – and even the derivative Archibald Skirving portrait which was drawn well after Burns died. Less well publicised is the fact that Robert Burns himself believed that a miniature executed by Alexander Reid, an unknown local artist, offered the best likeness. We are very fortunate that, courtesy of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery where it is normally to be found, this work will be on display at the Museum for the duration of the exhibition. Also included in the show will be a life sized model of Burns’s head, reconstructed by forensic scientists from the University of Dundee.”

Other confirmed artists are: Alison Buckle, Calum Colvin, Rosie Dahlstrom, Graham Fagen, Nina Fowler, Tom Gallant, Shannon Laing, The Little Artists, David Mach, Harland Miller, Paul Morrison, Alexander Newley, Deirdre Nicholls, Mark Powell, Adrian Wiszniewski.

Opera Opulence at Hanover Grange

Hanover Grange, Jamaica: Opera Opulence

Who would have guessed it?
That when Theresa and Andrew Roberts designed and built Hanover Grange, Montego Bay, Jamaica, they inadvertently incorporated an opera hall into the building to accompany my commissioned sculptures STATU I and II plus NUWDSTILL which can all be seen in this photo. Apparently, as another bonus, the acoustics are superb!
The mellifluous voice of the evening’s opera singers resonated through Hanover Grange. Read more about Hanover Grange, Jamaica, read the opera article in Jamaica Observer or watch the Opera Opulence video.

‘Fine Art Sails‘ Regatta 2014 Cowes

Artists were painting yacht sails for ARTSAILS
6 Stars competed in the 2014 edition of the Fine Art Sails Regatta, which was held in the premier sailing location in front of the Green in Cowes, during Cowes Week. Whilst earlier in the day, Cowes Week racing had been abandoned due to fickle breeze, the Star’s start time of 1700 meant that they experienced champagne conditions of 12-14kts and glorious evening sunshine.
This was the second edition of this unique event which was put together by RTYC member Peter Bonham-Christie, with Michael Ross and his CNM Estates Company, including my artwork “An Eye for the Buoys”, based on “EVE”, a steel panel suspended portrait in limited edition.

'Fine Art Sails' London 2013

Art on Sails

Read the Cowes Yachting Article, Spring Edition 2013 about all participating artists and the project:
A weekend of Fine Art Sails* racing at the London Boat Show 2013 was won by the boat and crew with my sail 'An Eye for the Buoys’.
Michael Ross' official CNM Estates UK Star Championship regatta award went to Xavier Rohart and Serge Pulfer.
Fine Art Sails is the first-of-its-kind collaboration between World Class Yachting and Internationally acclaimed artists. Established in 2012 by concept founder Michael Ross of CNM Estates, Fine Art Sails invites artists to create original artwork sails. I am delighted to take part!

My artwork for the sail is derived from 'EVE' 2008, a limited edition flat steel-panel sculpture translated into a sail format.

I am particularly impressed by how the origins of the 'Art Sails' idea have transformed from street art and graffiti painting into the initiation of a completely new art form, literally inventing a new 'canvas' on which artists are invited to work. I'm also simply amazed at the momentum and speed at which this project has moved and gathered force since it began in 2012.

The ethos of the 'Art Sails' concept and of Michael Ross' desire to draw together the seemingly disparate worlds of nautical sailing and 'the Arts' is potentially as versatile and expansive as the invited artists can make this concept themselves, culminating in an artwork of truly magnificent proportions. I am pleased and honoured to take part and as the image I have created for this project is derived from an existing sculpture, which in itself is originated from a tiny passport photo, this demonstrates how adaptable and surprising the 'Art Sails' concept actually is.

NYC SoHo loft party - 'London Calling'

I will be in New York in May, primarily to install a giant stainless steel sculpture (height 5.50m!) called ChaChaCha 2013, but we're also having a SoHo loft party:
If you are happen to be in NYC on 8th of May send me a rsvp if you like to join! I am pleased to show together with Keith Haynes and Kim Clayton-Jones, Art-Partnership presenting Vinyl Art!
